Different Hiking Pants
Let’s have a talk on different kind of hiking pants.
Casual Hiking Pants
For A Little Casual Hiking or Climbing . . .
. . . and the rest! Casual pants are great for a little hiking, a little weekend climbing, backpacking, camping, walking the dog, doing a little outside DIY, chopping wood . . . they’re designed to be casual (so you probably wouldn’t wear them for dinner in a fancy restaurant) but they’re also pretty rugged and durable.

Convertible Hiking Pants
Whatever The Weather
Convertible hiking pants are fantastic outdoor pants, you know what I mean by convertible right? They’re those nifty pants with a zipper around each leg so you can take the bottom part of your pants off and just wear shorts. What a brilliant idea, I wish I’d thought of it. Anyway, convertible hiking pants are terrific . . . you can keep your legs covered in the mornings when it’s a bit chilly, or when you are hiking through brush and need a little protection, then just take them off as the sun warms up and get a well deserved “blow-through”, especially in the knee area.
By the way, I couldn’t find any images of convertible hiking pants, so I thought you might like this photo of a short eared owl instead . . . good isn’t it? I had a close encounter with a Barn owl once, it sort of swooped over my head as I was hiking along a trail at dusk . . . magical! Anyway, back to the pants . . . .
These pants can be used as any kind of outdoor pants like hiking, backpacking, camping, weekend slobbing around the house . . . convertible pants are great for lots of different things. Convertible pants do need other features though, to make them suitable for backpacking, camping, hiking, climbing and other activities . . . apart from having detachable legs!
Fleece Hiking Pants
Keeping You Snug
Fleece pants . . . just the name of them makes you feel all warm inside, especially if, like me, you’re sitting with a draught around your ankles and are just contemplating having to start wearing socks again . . . yes folks, it’s that time of year again and winter is definitely on the way.
Anyway, fleece pants can keep you warm and snug whether you’re hiking, camping, walking the dog or just slobbing around on the sofa . . . they’re that comfortable. Don’t let the idea of fleece pants remind you of those dreadful shapeless things you had to wear for field hockey practice at school . . . you remember those days when the teachers would send you out in the ice and snow to get some exercise dressed only in a t-shirt and fleece pants (if you remembered to take them . . . shorts if not) whilst they stood in a shelter with a hot coffee in hand . . . winter hat, gloves, scarves, boots and that darned whistle . . . peep . . . run a bit faster if you’re cold! I am convinced that Phys Ed teachers need to have certain qualities which are not all that endearing . . . some might call them personality disorders!
“Winter is nature’s way of saying, “Up yours.” – Robert Byrne
Fleece hiking pants are a whole lot more stylish as well as completely practical for all outdoor winter activities (not sure about hockey).

Soft Shell Hiking Pants
Great For When You’re Hiking and Climbing . . . And Great For When You’re Not
Soft Shell Hiking Pants are fantastic for when you fancy a little cold weather hiking or climbing. You get your own micro-climate even in the most movement intense cold weather sports. Available in different weights (for different degrees of coldness . . . . (the “chilly factor”) yet lightweight in materials and offering great comfort and freedom of movement, no wonder many seasoned hikers reach for their soft shell hiking pants when the temperatures start to drop and a nip appears in the air. The problem is that when you’re hiking through the snow in some pants, although your legs are initially very warm (even sweaty), as you kick up the powder snow this wets your pants and eventually, once the sun goes down, you get very cold legs!

Soft shell hiking pants are great for when you’re hiking and climbing, but they’re also great for mountaineering, mountain biking, backpacking and back country skiing. What do you need to look out for?
